What's That In The Air?

It's [sniff sniff] The Smell Of Summer Slacking

It's deep summer and we are marinated in the gravy of laziness, adrift in a sea of chores ignored, projects abandoned and rental movies unreturned (late fees pending).

Who am I to jam a broom handle in the spokes of Mother Nature's ten-speed?

No, the season of slack must be observed.

And so, in honor of the Great Machine and its dictates, I hereby phone in this post with minimal effort and share with you a standup set that I performed a while back at The Hollywood Improv.

I completely understand if you're too lazy to hit the play button.

  1. Good stuff, Anna. And I'm trying to not be offended by the Japanese bit since my husband is from Japan. Kidding. My father-in-law totally wears socks and sandals. You nailed it.

  2. Now I'm totally going to get a battleship tattoo on my chest! :)

Here, it's not the season of lazy. It's the season of clenching my fists and wanting to bang my head against a cement block b/c there's still 3 more weeks until school starts.

  4. Ahh the old days of comedy. For me that is. I did comedy from 90 - 93. That's when Paul F Tomkins was there.

  6. Your slacking professional stand up comic video is givng my slacking amateur cooking vlog a complex! Seriously though - I LOVED this. I wasn't at BlogHer - so it was the first time I've seen you "in person." And I won't hold the fact that you mocked my rainbow tramp stamp against you.

  7. I'll come back after I've mastered my overwhelming envy....

  8. Awesome! Your delivery is great. I would be stuttering, sweaty and blotchy if I had to stand up there. You rock!

  12. Anna! Funny stuff.I'm getting the air quoting from my kid too.
And your voice is so melifluous, though I somehow imagined you'd sound more like Diane Sawyer :)

    Peace - Rene

  16. Marinated in the gravy of laziness. The cats(who are curled up in balls, sleeping) & I (drinking my coffee) are insulted.

  17. Tiny Tart, great handle. May work if you want to be a Japanese porn star. Very entertaining stuff and impressive you can swing stand up. I think all of us are suffering from a lack of initiative at the end of the summer. Now is not the time for getting things done.

  18. I'd seen this before, but it was just as funny the second time around - you're brilliant!

  23. Holy crap! I knew you were a funny writer and suspected you'd be hilarious in person, but this is amazing!

I didn't know you do stand up. That takes so much courage...and you're really good at it. Your material is great, especially the moms with tattoos bit, the gay hubby joke and the Secret life insurance check. I admire you so much for taking it onstage and delivering it so well.

I'm intimidated now. I may never be able to comment again, knowing you're even that much more funny than I am.

  24. Hi Anna,

For some reason I messed up something and I never get any notice of my comments so I often see them way too late. I really want to write about my comedy audition but since I thought you never came by the blog, I forgot about it. I will absolutely write it up tommorow.

Thanks for your kind word about my blogs. I need to seperate them because my gay man, gay woman, and just plain woman are all showing up as Tarra Slovan. Wierd conundrum.

Love your blog, terrific writing, and wishing you the best of luck in comedyland.

  25. I've commented before, but I just have to say you are funny...DEFINED! I wish I was a portion of the 'funny' you spew forth.

    You are brilliance personified!!

  28. I love your timing and understatedness. Which is not a word, but I am exhausted from pushing play, so I'm going with it.

  29. Tee hee hee, I can always count on you for a good laugh!

  30. Totally jealous you do standup. Always wanted to try that, but never had enough guts. Maybe I'll just get a tattoo instead.

  33. Trying to steal some me time by watching your hilarious standup post with earphones, so my kid will keep playing her Leapfrog computer and not interrupt. Efforts thwarted because you're too damn funny and I was laughing out loud.

  34. Wonderfully Funny. But I almost didn't recognize you without the mustache.
